10 innovation and improvement updates for August:

Edition 1/ August 2010

As another month passes, here are 10 things which caught our attention and which may be interesting to you. Please don’t keep these to yourself, forward to colleagues who may also benefit.

1National Public Sector Innovation Survey - NESTA and the DH are encouraging NHS organisations in our region to participate in a national survey to enable you to benchmark the innovativeness of your organisation with other NHS organisations and the wider public sector. The survey takes the form of a 30 min telephone conversation with a senior representative from each participating organisation who leads innovation or transformation/improvement activities.

2Funding Opportunities with the NIHR SDO Programme - which improves health outcomes for people by commissioning research evidence that improves practice in relation to the organisation and delivery of healthcare. It also builds research capability and capacity to carry out research amongst those who manage, organise and deliver services and improves their understanding of the research literature and how to use research evidence.

There are three new calls for proposals, which must be submitted in full by 1pm on Thursday 16th September 2010:

10/1010: Unplanned hospital admissions

10/1011: Responsive funding in the NIHR SDO programme - call for proposals from researchers for secondary research studies

10/1012: Expedited evidence synthesis to support decision-making by managers and leaders in the NHS

3NHS South Central Innovation Challenge - Have you got an innovative approach that could contribute to a reduction in hospital admissions of 20%?

The Innovation Challenge is being led and funded by South Central Strategic Health Authority. It is looking to all sectors – both within and outside the NHS and including industry to bring new technologies and new practice to bear on the achievement of an ambitious target of a 20% reduction in admissions to hospital within the next 2 years.

All information and documentation in relation to the Challenge is available at the NHS South Central Innovation Challenge Website, closing date 23rd August 2010:

5Sharing Success - we are currently collating a Library of Innovations to share across South Central to support the diffusion of some of the excellent work that has been undertaken locally. We are especially interested in cheap, quick and easy innovations that have provided a measurable impact on quality and productivity. The library will be hosted on the Innovation South Central Network site.

If you would like to contribute please complete the brief proforma document at the following link and send toscinnovation@southcentral.nhs.uk

6  NHSI Delivery Plan - The NHS Institute’s challenge for the coming year is to help the NHS deliver the changes required on an industrial scale and to provide skilled implementation support across the country.  In partnership with organizations they will encourage more capacity building for leaders of improvement and identify change agents who can make this possible.

The aim is to deepen the reach of quality improvements across the whole of the NHS and work more closely with partner organisations

For more information on the NHSI delivery plan please contact Nicola Priest  (Nicola.priest@southcentral.nhs.uk07825448212)

The Spending Challenge   -  The UK government is using a simple online webpage to gather ideas on how to save money. It is called the Spending Challenge. You can input your idea, some words about how it can be implemented, add a tag or two and then post it. You can read through others' ideas, add tags and ratings. The system allows you to search by tag, new ideas, most commented or highest rated.  What ideas have you had?  What ideas could you use?

8  Invest in  Engagement   -  produced by the Picker Institute Europe, the site analyses and makes accessible the results of 280 research reviews.
Funded by the Department of Health, the site aims to help NHS managers use effective patient engagement to drive up quality and productivity of care .

Better Care Better Value  -  Effective healthcare is efficient healthcare. The NHS must demonstrate that it is making the most effective use it can of public money to deliver quality healthcare. This website is designed to help local NHS organisations do this. It is based around 15 high-level indicators of efficiency that identify potential areas for improvement in efficiency. These indicators can be used locally to help inform planning, to inform views on the scale of potential efficiency savings in different aspects of care and to generate ideas on how to achieve these savings.
